Personal Info:

Horrie was the second of eight children born to Richard Donelly and Mary Sutherland in the now non-existent gold mining town of Deptford, East Gippsland. He enlisted in 1976 at the age of 18 to fight in WW1 and saw action on the Western Front, in particular at the Battle of the Somme, at Ypres and Villers Bretonneux.

His hobbies included fishing and shooting, and he was very involved in the Blackburn Gun Club during the 1940’s winning the Double Barrel shot gun competition Champion of Champions for Clay Target shooting twice (1941 and 1948).

In later life Horrie enjoyed gold prospecting and restoring violins. He was a keen ballroom dancer and played the piano accordion and violin at any opportunity. After living in and around the eastern suburbs of Melbourne from the mid-1930’s, Horrie and his wife Zetta moved to Caloundra on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast in 1976 to enjoy their retirement. They we joined soon after by their two daughters, Phyllis and Heather who lived in neighbouring suburbs.

Zetta passed away in 1985, and in 1993 Horrie moved to The Centaur RSL Aged Care Hostel in Caloundra where he subsequently passed away in 1997. He is survived by his three daughters, three granddaughters, four great grandchild and one great-great grandson.
