Year inducted into the ACTA Hall of Fame: 2016 Darryn started winning as a junior, coming third in the Double Barrel in 1983 at the Trap nationals in Adelaide. Darryn continued to practice and it wasn't until 1994 when he won his first open event in Double Barrel at the SA State carnival. 1999 saw him win the Double Barrel event at the Trap nationals in Roma. As the years moved on, he won several state and national events through 2000 to 2009. 2010 saw Darryn win the South African national Single Barrel event and then the ultimate event in trap shooting by becoming the 9th World DTL champion with a score of 1047/1050 only missing three targets during the competition and beating his closest rival from New Zealand, Neil McKeown by a point. During the same event he was part of the Australian World Open Team and achieved third place overall. 2011 saw Darryn make his first team in the Open Mackintosh Team as the highest qualifier along with making the Australian team. 2012 saw an increase in his achievements grow expenetially. Winning the prestigious Doug Smith medal, along with being the national runner up in Double Barrel and runner up in the New Zealand national Points score. He represented Australia for the first time in the Glenn Cup team, where Australia was defeated by New Zealand 247 to 245. 2013 was another busy year, winning four national events including Double Barrel, Double Rise, Champion of Champions and the Family Deauville Doubles. He set a new Australian record of 1038 targets at 15m and also set a new record as the highest achiever of the national high gun. By the end of the week of the Trap nationals in Perth, firstly he had equalled the record for the most overall wins by a single shooter. Not since 1965 when the great Warren Charlton set the bench mark has anyone been able to take home four of the overall silver Australia badges at any one event until now. Even that effort paled when his overall high gun total was tallied up with the record being seven down, and Darryn achieved only two down with a score of 473/475, it is almost inconceivable. What an achievement! He also joined the ranks of AA elite. 2014 was another great year for achievements. Breaking the long standing Australian long run record set by Russell Mark in 1994 with a score of 1553 straight achieved during the trap nationals in Wagga Wagga. Winning the Single Barrel and breaking the record again with 234. Winning the Double Barrel and being runner up in Points score, Double Rise and Family Deauville Doubles, as well as breaking the national high gun record again in 2015 with 722/725. There has only ever been three winners before winning the national Single Barrel and Double Barrel in the same year. They were three of the greatest trap shooters this country has ever produced. Darryn won the Doug Smith medal again and was third in the World DTL Championships in New Zealand. He was inducted into the South Australian Hall of Fame and awarded the South Australian Presidential medal for his achievements to date. He also topped it off by winning the New Zealand mini championships and became the New Zealand high gun. 2015, his achievements still kept coming. he won the national Handicap and Double Barrel events. This was the third year in a row that he won the Double Barrel and the first person to do so. He received his Grand Slam award and a Masters Award for achieving 800 targets straight, along with another Doug Smith medal and the only one to receive the Mackintosh Perfect score that year. |
